Investigation results

This museum has 4 objects with a potentially problematic provenance.

Result of this investigation

Investigators of Leiden Regional Archive checked the museum’s registration system, catalogues, annual reports, inventory books and archive on behalf of Lakenhal Museum. All acquisitions of paintings, drawings, watercolours and gold and silver objects since 1933 were examined. The supervisory committee compiled a list of objects to be checked in a follow-up investigation which was carried out by a Museum Association investigator and which resulted in the identification of four paintings with potentially problematic provenance: Alexander Hugo Bakker Korff’s Still Life with Chinese Figure belonged to Jacques Goudstikker, a prewar Jewish art dealer; the museum bought Jacobus Ludovicus Cornet’s Studio at Paul Zwaal’s art gallery in Amsterdam in 1943 - it is unclear when and from whom Paul Zwaal acquired it; Jacob Fransz van der Merck’s Still Life with Fruit was sold at Mandelbaum & Kronthal’s auction house in November 1935 - who submitted it for auction (only the letters Pl. are recorded) is not recorded; Floris Verster’s Zinnias in a Green Ginger Jar was sold in 1942 at Van Marle & Bignell auction by Van Nederveen Boersma who also sold several items relating to Jewish practice at the same auction - no record remains of how the vendor acquired the painting.
