Conclusion

The provenance of this painting is not complete, as it is not known when and from whom Max J. Friedländer acquired the painting.

Explanation

The drawing was bought by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen at an auction organized by Paul Brandt in Amsterdam on March 17,1959, where works from the estate of Max J. Friedländer were offered. It is not known when and from whom the Jewish art historian Max J. Friedländer acquired the drawing. It is highly likely that it came into Friedländer’s possession after the passing of the Jewish artist Max Liebermann (08-02-1935), who was a friend of his, for one can find an estate stamp in the lower left corner of the drawing. The widow Martha Liebermann (1857-1943) applied this stamp to artworks that were present in the studio of the artist after his death. The Nazi’s confiscated Liebermann’s art collection after Martha Liebermann’s suicide (10-03-1943). Currently there are no indications that this drawing was part of the confiscated estate of Martha Liebermann.
