Conclusion
The provenance of the painting is unclear since the identity of the person who consigned it to Fred. A. van Braam’s auction in 1943 is no longer known. In fact it is not even certain whether that is the same painting as the work in the museum.
Explanation
This painting may have passed through Fred. A. van Braam’s auction house in Amsterdam during the war. The possibility is being investigated because a Van Braam auction house label on the reverse of the frame appears to date from 1943. This painting may be the Two Sisters. This firm may have auctioned confiscated property in the war years.
J.A. Kruseman’s Salome with the Head of John the Baptist (inv. no. SK-A-5009) at the Rijksmuseum, was probably (also) sold at a Van Braam sale in 1943.
