Conclusion
Since it is unclear when and from whom J.J. Thole acquired this painting, its provenance is uncertain.
Explanation
This painting belongs to the Dutch nation - it is part of the Nederlandse Kunstcollectie under government control. On 24 February 1960 it was given to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It is listed on the website of Bureau Herkomst Gezocht.
The painting was purchased from a private collection in Düsseldorf for Adolf Hitler’s collection, for the Führer Museum in Linz, through the mediation of Dorotheum auction house in Vienna.
J.J. Thole may be the same Job Thole of Huizen who is mentioned in the provenance of a Huybrecht Beuckelaer (Sotheby’s sale, New York, 26 January 2012, no. 105). Job Thole helped Dr Rudolph Berl (1884-1963) bring paintings to the Netherlands after the Anschluss (1938). In 2002, a painting was returned to one of Berl’s heirs (inv. no. NK2646). A report compiled by the Restitution Committee at the time describes Job Thole as a friend of the family.
The anonymous Portrait of Maximilian II Maria Emanuel (1662-1726), Elector of Bavaria, at the Battle of Mohacs against the Turks (inv. no. SK-A-4016) in the Rijksmuseum was also consigned at the same auction by J.J. Thole.
