Conclusion
The provenance of the painting is unclear since the identity of the person who consigned it to Fred. A. van Braam’s auction in 1943 is no longer known.
Explanation
This painting passed through Fred. A. van Braam’s auction house in Amsterdam during the war. This firm may have auctioned confiscated property in the war years.
M. Calisch’s Two Women in Italian Costume (inv. no. SK-A-4181) at the Rijksmuseum, was probably also sold at a Van Braam sale in 1943.
