About this museum and its collection
In 1866, the Mesdag-Van Houtens began collecting works by artists they admired. The collection that they accumulated over several decades comprises around 850 objects, and features paintings by artists of the Barbizon and Hague School. Japanese calligraphy and ceramics by Theodoor Colenbrander also drew their attention. The Mesdag collection has been managed by Van Gogh Museum since 1990.
