Conclusion

Who consigned this painting to Frederik Muller auction house in 1943 is unclear, as is the identity of the previous owner.

Explanation

This painting was listed at the Frederik Muller auction on 19 October 1943 as obtained from ‘Various collections and estates’. A comment penciled in the margin of an annotated catalogue states the buyer’s name: Mettes. This may refer to Kunstzaal J.J. Mettes & Co on Noordeinde in The Hague. This gallery specialised in the Hague School, Impressionists, Israels and Breitner in the 1940s and ’50s.
Investigators have not been able to trace who owned the painting between 1937 and 1943.
