Conclusion

These drawings were part of the prewar collection of Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker.

Explanation

These six drawings are part of a series of twelve. Six drawings are in the Stedelijk Museum collection in Amsterdam. Jan Toorop made them in 1904 and 1905 at a candle factory in Gouda. They show the manufacture of wax candles and were presented to the director, Hendrik IJssel de Schepper.

The series was purchased at a Frederik Muller auction jointly with Gemeentemuseum The Hague and divided equally between the two museums.

The drawings were part of art dealer Jacques Goudstikker’s collection. They were in Goudstikker’s possession at the outbreak of the Second World War. Alois Miedl, who took over the art gallery when Goudstikker fled, consigned the works for sale at a Frederik Muller auction on 8 and 9 October 1940. Goudstikker died in an accident while fleeing the country on 16 May 1940.

The museum is in contact with the heirs.
