Conclusion

Who owned this painting before it was handed in to the police in 1946 is not known.

Explanation

In January 1946, someone brought this painting to a police station in Amsterdam, explaining that it had been found in a house in Velp (Gelderland) where a collaborator from Amsterdam who had served in the SD had lived. The latter had probably acquired the work in Amsterdam. It was received at the police station by commissioner M.O.F. van der Heul, head of the political intelligence department (P.O.D.). He contacted Stichting Nederlands Kunstbezit to locate the legitimate owner. When that attempt failed, it was given to Gemeentemuseum Arnhem in 1948.

Update

On 20 July 2016 the Restitutions Committee advised the Minister of Education, Culture and Science to reject a claim to this painting. The minister rejected the claim.
